Welcome to The College of Physics at Chongqing University, China.

The physics discipline in Chongqing University (CQU) is one of the three earliest disciplines in 1929 when CQU was established. With the reorganization of the Chinese system of higher education in 1952, the physics discipline in CQU was migrated to Sichuan University, and it was lately recovered in 1977. At present, the physics discipline is oriented as the strategic disciplines to build CQU into world's first-class universities. The university will provide full support for the development of the physics discipline. The missions include improving the academic level of physics discipline to first class in China, making critical breakthrough in certain research directions, accomplishing world-wide impacting works, supporting the cooperative development of other advantaged disciplines such as the mechanical engineering, the civil engineering, and the material science, providing a strong theoretical basis for those disciplines, and to make important contributions to establish CQU as one of the world's first class universities.

Currently, the physics discipline grants the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science, and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees, possessing the First-Class Doctoral Program and Postdoctoral Research Station in China. Each year, the physics discipline enrolls around 185 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students. Each year around 44% undergraduate students pursue advanced studies after finishing their Bachelor degrees, and part of them go to leading international universities, such as University of Cincinnati, University of Pittsburgh, Technische Universität Berlin, and The Australian National University, etc. Our graduate students make important contributions to support national strategic development. Many of our graduates are prestigious professors and have obtained outstanding achievements in their fields.

There are more than 80 full-time academic faculties including three foreign academic staffs, and over 60 faculty members have senior titles. In particular, two professors were supported by the National Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars, four professors were selected as Outstanding Young Scholars of China, and eleven professors were supported by Provincial Excellent Scientific and Technological Talents program. In the fourth-round disciplines evaluation in China, the physics discipline of CQU got the B rank and tied for the 26th place. Today, the physical discipline is at top 1% in the ranking of Essential Science Indicators all over the world.

Research in the physics discipline in CQU is devoted not only to the frontiers of fundamental physics but also to the innovation of advanced applications. The physics discipline has achieved numerous world-renowned works, which have been present in Phys. Rev. Lett., Nat. Commun., Sci. Adv., and other top journals, and plays a leading role, locally, nationally, and globally. At the current state, it has a sophisticated development plan on six distinctive research fields.

The physics discipline in CQU has gradually improved its national and international influences. In the past five years, more than 20 international and domestic conferences have been convoked, and there are more than 200 high-quality papers in cooperation with Prof. S.J.Brodsky form Stanford University, Prof. Wang Zhonglin from Georgia Institute of Technology, and Prof. C.D.Roberts from Argonne National Laboratory, et. al. Furthermore, the physics discipline carries out extensive cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in promoting the selection and training of top talented undergraduate and graduate students, for examples, we establish the "Qian Sanqiang Talents Class" with the Institute of High-Energy Physics of CAS, the "Yan Jici Talents Class" with the Institute of Physics of CAS, and the "Peng Huanwu Science and Education Cooperation Center" with the Institute of Theoretical Physics of CAS.

From 2016 to 2020, the educational and scientific conditions of physics discipline have been remarkably improved. The CQU has invested nearly 100 million CNY each year to build a public platform of the Analytical and Testing Center, providing important support for the physics discipline to carry out frontier researches on new energy materials, semiconductor materials, smart materials, and quantum materials. From 2019, the CQU started to invest over 60 million CNY to build The Center for Quantum Materials and Device, and now the first batch of instruments such as the superconducting magnet cryostat has arrived. In the past five years, the physics discipline has received more than 60 new NSFC funds, and 10 publications on Phys. Rev. Lett. and several invited reviews on internationally authorative journals. These recognized innovations significantly improve the level and influence of physics discipline in CQU.
